MORE NEWS ON PROMETHEUS…

Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland in Prometheus

The plot behind Ridley Scott's Prometheus has been carefully guarded and only drips and drabs of what to expect have been leaked. In that time we've heard the film will be a loosely based prequel to the 1979 film Alien, also directed by Scott and that the trailer gives a hint to the location and the re-appearance of the 'Space Jockey' from the original Alien film. Yesterday, a Hungarian interviewer spoke to Scott about the film and revealed that there may be a link to, not only Alien, but … [Read more...]

THE AVENGERS FULL LENGTH TRAILER

Avengers_Thor_Coulson_HD

The new Avengers Trailer just dropped today, although I'm informed the name of the film has been changed in the UK, so not to be confused with the 60's TV show 'The Avengers', to the more catchy "Marvel Avengers Assemble". Because everyone knows that the demographic for a comic book film is the same as a 60's TV show, duh! The Avengers are made up of, if you guys are not up-to-date, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, that dude with the bow and arrow (useful) and Scarlett Johansson's … [Read more...]

OH YEAH…THE DEAN FROM COMMUNITY WON AN OSCAR TOO…

I forgot to say that there was another whammy the night of the Oscars...Jim Rash, a.k.a Community's Dean Pelton, won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants....who saw that coming? As I write this I've just noticed that the guy to the left is the crazy German drinker in Beerfest.....what the hell! I still think this (below) is his best work though.... http://youtu.be/dQ5FBwLi_as … [Read more...]

SETH ROGAN’S OPENING MONOLOGUE – INDEPENDANT SPIRIT AWARDS

SETH ROGAN OPENING MONOLOGUE FOR INDEPENDANT SPIRIT AWARDS 2012

Seth Rogan has been quietly serving his apprenticeship in hosting awards ceremonies. So far he's presented awards for MTV, the Espy's, the Golden Globes and the Oscars. On Saturday he got the chance to host the Independent Spirit Awards, opening with a 15min monologue, which is just pure film-buff comedy heaven. You can see how Ricky Gervais has influenced the skill of hosting by witnessing Rogan's, very British-like, piss taking of the celebrities in attendance, albeit … [Read more...]

BRET McKENZIE HAS AN OSCAR NOW…

SCCZEN_AP120227163345_460x230

Last nights Oscars went pretty much to plan...no upsets, no dramas and the french pretty much took it all. I was however hoping that Viola Davis would take the Best Actress award, but alas the Academy chose to complete Meryl Streep's bookend set instead. In any other year Clooney would have won the Best Actor award, but didn't stand a chance with the unstoppable momentum of The Artist's Jean Durjardin. Perhaps the best news of the night came when Bret McKenzie, from Flight of the Conchords fame, … [Read more...]

VIOLA DAVIS DESERVES AN OSCAR

Screen shot 2012-02-19 at 17.40.51

Viola Davis is one of those actors who keeps turning up in bit parts of major movies with a brief supporting role, but ends up over shadowing her, more established, co-stars with superb performances. She's only recently rocketed to international stardom with her latest film 'The Help', for which she has been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. It's quite a feat, considering she is a 46 year old African American woman, a demographic for which very few roles are awarded. The road taken to reach … [Read more...]

AMERICAN PIE – ONE MORE SLICE

American Pie 27

Today the trailer for the latest installment of the American Pie franchise, 'American Reunion', has been released. The first film in the series came out in 1999, just as all the Y2K hysteria began, and if this is supposed to be a high school reunion, then that would set the film in 2009? Assuming my knowledge of reunion math is correct....graduations year +10 years...who the hell knows, perhaps it'll set the film up for some pre-Obama era jokes....does this mean it's a period drama [insert … [Read more...]

UGGIE, INSPIRES INCREASE IN JACK RUSSEL ADOPTION

Photo: AP Photo/Matt Sayles

The Artist's main star, Jean Durjardin...hu-um...sorry I mean Uggie the dog, has had such a huge impact on movie-goers that it's raised the demand for people adopting Jack Russel Terriers from local shelters. In particular, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has seen a massive rise in demand for this specific breed alone. On the night of the BAFTAs, about 630 people visited their website looking for Jack Russel Terriers, and with the Oscars coming up this Sunday the numbers are expected to surge … [Read more...]

OSCARS 2012 – VOTER DEMOGRAPHICS

6a00d8341c630a53ef016762bb8c18970b-600wi

Well it came as no surprise today, when the LA Times reported on the demographics that make up the Academy, who vote on all the awards given at the Oscars, is made up of mostly white old men...see above. The breakdown of the demographics is as follows:- Median age of Academy voters: 62 Voters younger than 50: 14% 77% male, 23% female 94% Caucasian 2% black Less than 2% Latino Caucasians make up more than 90% of every branch except actors, which are 88% white. SHAME AD: FASSBENDER IS WATCHING YOU

Shame-newspaper-ad

The marketers for Steve McQueen's film Shame have outdone themselves with this Newspaper ad, showing Micheal Fassbender's silhouette overlaid onto an escort ad page. Pretty slick considering the film's storyline is about sex addiction. … [Read more...]

KERMODE HEARS THE BAD NEWS – TRANSFORMERS 4

Mark-Kermode-007

Every now and again you have one of the those days were you think nothing can go wrong. Your morning has started out well and everything looks gravy....then you read the blogs and find out Michael Bay is making ANOTHER TRANSFORMERS MOVIE!! Why oh why??!?! I blame everyone in the world who, actually paid money, to see the last 3 Transformer films....I include myself of course, I went to see the first one with some friends, after which I swore to never again see any follow up squeals, if they ever … [Read more...]

THE BECHDAL TEST – GENDER BIAS IN FILM

BECHDEL

Just saw this interesting video discussing the Bechdal Test, which applies a set of simple rules to gauge the gender bias of a film. The rules are as follows: The film must have at least two woman in it. Who talk to each other About something other than a man An additional qualifier could also be added to the list, requiring the woman to have named parts. Not surprisingly, many films fail this test. The video created by Feminist Frequency applies the test to the 2012 Best Picture … [Read more...]

SOUNDTRACKING #3 – THE COMPOSITIONS OF PHILIP GLASS

philip-glass

The first time I encountered Philip Glass’s music was in the Academy Award winning documentary The Fog of War. The structure of the film follows the ‘Eleven Lessons from Life’ as experienced by the elder statesman, and former Kennedy-era US Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara. The documentary’s continuous score makes you fell like your watching a summary of the interviews rather than an in-depth feature. The score does however fall silent upon the introduction of each lesson and then … [Read more...]

RIDLEY SCOTT’S PROMETHEUS – FIRST TRAILER

2012-movie-prometheus

Prometheus, the follow up to Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien, has just launched its first international trailer today. Written by LOST creator Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts, the story precedes the events of Alien, but is not directly connected to the films in the Alien franchise....so half way between a reboot and a prequel then. The cast looks pretty freaking cool, with Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender (of Shame), Idris Elba (The Wire's Stringer Bell), Guy Pierce and Noomi Rapace (of the … [Read more...]

SOUNDTRACKING #2 – DRIVE

DRIVE

Drive's 2011 soundtrack is arguable the best of the year, regardless of the fact that it 'borrowed' a few tracks form Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's 2010 soundtrack for The Social Network. The film is peppered with enough synth to make you feel like you accidentally rented a Beta Max from the Blockbusters down the road. The 80's motif is carried on through to the opening title sequence and song, by Kavinsky's - "Nightcall" featuring Lovefoxx from Brazilian band CSS. Someone on Spotify has been … [Read more...]
